With the changes in society and culture, the meaning of food is no longer just a biological necessity. The meaning of food is rooted in the historical context of production. In different eras, food carries contemporary needs and thoughts in the form of commodities or noncommodities. Pineapples are both food and main agricultural commodities in Taiwan, with most of them exported to China. Now that China has called a halt to it, the pineapple industry in Taiwan must undergo alteration, which cannot be achieved without the strong support of public policy, particularly in the area of physical investment, technological upgrading, and institutional arrangements for distribution and credit. During this process, the agricultural sector must adjust to changes in the economic environment. The development of agriculture in Taiwan is restricted by natural conditions, which results in the small-scale production compared to that in Western countries. The pineapple industry not only brings huge business opportunities, but also represents the vitality in Taiwan’s rural areas. In the following months, I will be trying to find out how do different actors (the government, producers, CSOs) in the production and marketing network adjust and compromise in this case, and also clarify the conditions and limitations of the development of the pineapple industry. During the meeting, I will introduce how I plan to conduct my investigation.
